On Sunday, September 20, 2009 companies from the 5th Battalion responded to the area of Kimberly Court and Grand River for the report of a dwelling fire. While enroute to the scene E42 reported to Central Office that the had heavy smoke showing, arriving on the scene they reported a vacant two story dwelling fully involved and requested that the second arriving Engine be prepared to dump it monitor. Companies were forced into a defensive only operation; E39 dumped its monitor on the dwelling and L28 set up for tower operations. C5 requested a 4th Engine for RIT and had the third arriving Engine stretch into L28. Companies worked to keep the fire from spreading to the dwelling on either side of the fire due to the extreme radiant heat. Crews worked through the night to bring this fire under control.
